NextGenMicrofluidics among 15 projects nominated for the applied research prize of the B&C Private Foundation
Miniaturized laboratories, so-called microfluidic “lab-on-a-foil” chips, are becoming increasingly important for medical applications, food and feed analyses, environmental monitoring and the local on-demand production of pharmaceuticals.
Martin Smolka and his team at JOANNEUM RESEARCH in Weiz are leading the EU project “NextGenMicrofluidics”, in which the cost-effective and scalable production of chips is being developed with customers for their applications. At the same time, the team is establishing the “Microfluidics Innovation Hub”, a European network that offers small and medium-sized enterprises access to microfluidics experts and implementation options from development to production, including the involvement of investors. This central point of contact, combined with the team’s expertise, strengthens Austria’s position and competitiveness in the rapidly developing field of microfluidics.
These efforts have been recognized by the private foundation B&C Privatstiftung, which shortlisted NGM for the Houska Prize 2024 in the category non-university research. NGM is now among 15 projects in 3 research categories nominated for the prestigious award. A jury of experts will determine the winners at the awards ceremony on 25 April in Vienna.
